Not having sex is the only 100 percent proven method for preventing pregnancy.   And while it may feel like everyone around you is having sex, that isn’t the case at all. Nationwide, less than half of teens in high school have had sex (only 42 percent of girls and 43 percent of boys).

Waiting has its advantages, and in fact, about two out of three teens who have had sex wish they had waited. Why is this method best?  Not only does it prevent pregnancy, but it also protects against sexually transmitted infections. Better yet, you can avoid dealing with some of the emotional consequences that come with being sexually active.

  • Abstinence is 100 percent effective

  • Abstinence doesn’t require a visit to a doctor or pharmacy necessary. Just make the decision and talk to your partner.

  • Deciding to wait protects you from both pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
